How it works
This blank map of Myanmar, also called Burma, opens on the plain outline of the country. Switch Borders on for its states and regions. The map source does not draw the Naypyidaw Union Territory apart, so Mandalay carries no number.

A plain outline first
The sheet opens with nothing inside the outline but a dot for Naypyidaw, the capital. Press Print this map for a blank map of Burma to draw rivers, cities or borders on.
States and regions
Switch Borders on first: it adds the lines of the seven states and seven regions, and Numbered and Named then label 13 of them. The shape with the dot has no number: it is Mandalay Region together with the Naypyidaw Union Territory, which the map source does not draw apart.
- Have students write the two missing names in by hand: Mandalay Region, and the Naypyidaw Union Territory around the dot.
Questions and answers
Is Burma the same country as Myanmar?
Yes. Burma was the country’s official English name until 1989. This map uses Myanmar, and the quiz also accepts older names such as Rangoon for Yangon and Arakan for Rakhine.
How many states and regions does Myanmar have?
Seven states, seven regions and a union territory, Naypyidaw (also written Nay Pyi Taw). The states are Chin, Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Mon, Rakhine and Shan. The regions are Ayeyarwady, Bago, Magway, Mandalay, Sagaing, Tanintharyi and Yangon.
Why does Mandalay have no number?
The map source has no line between Mandalay Region and the Naypyidaw Union Territory, so the two are one shape here. The other 13 shapes are states and regions as they are today, and only those are numbered.
Which countries border Myanmar?
India and Bangladesh (northwest), China (northeast), and Laos and Thailand (east and southeast), all unnamed. Some borders on this map are disputed. The map follows Natural Earth, a public-domain map source, and does not take a side.
