How it works
This endocrine system hormones quiz has 42 questions in three sets: which gland makes a hormone, what the hormone does, and which hormone does a given job. Every answer shows the reason.
Read the full guide
Three sets
Which gland covers the pancreas, the pituitary lobes, the adrenal cortex and medulla, and organs such as the kidney and heart. What it does asks the effect: insulin on blood glucose, PTH on calcium. Which hormone runs it backwards.
Pairs that oppose
Several questions set up opposing pairs: insulin and glucagon for blood sugar, calcitonin and PTH for calcium, aldosterone and ANP for sodium. Learn them as pairs and the set gets easier.
The posterior pituitary makes nothing itself: it releases ADH and oxytocin made in the hypothalamus.
Hormones ending in -tropin or -stimulating act on another gland: TSH on the thyroid, ACTH on the adrenal cortex.
Questions and answers
What are the main glands of the endocrine system?
The hypothalamus, pituitary, pineal, thyroid, parathyroids, thymus, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries and testes. Organs such as the kidney, heart, stomach and fat tissue also release hormones, and the quiz asks about those too.
Which hormones come from the anterior pituitary?
Growth hormone, TSH, ACTH, FSH, LH and prolactin. Four of them act on other glands: TSH on the thyroid, ACTH on the adrenal cortex, FSH and LH on the ovaries and testes. The posterior pituitary releases ADH and oxytocin.
Is this quiz medical advice?
No. It asks the names, glands and jobs a school or college anatomy and physiology course teaches. It says nothing about illness, tests or treatment.
