How this list was compiled: Items made on 2026-10-01; ids and points are the points file's, labels are Natural Earth's English names where the points file does not say otherwise, and the accepted spellings are the ones the two name sources print. THE DRAWING IS DATED: it has 16 provinces and Vientiane Prefecture, and Laos has 17 provinces and the prefecture since Xaisomboun was made a province on 13 December 2013. The map source does not draw Xaisomboun: all of it lies inside the shape the source calls Vientiane Province. The page numbers and asks the 15 provinces and the prefecture that are drawn as they are today (Xiangkhouang among them); the Vientiane Province shape with the land of Xaisomboun is in this file for the drawing and is never asked. Which shapes are today's was checked on 2026-10-01 by laying the drawing's source shapes over two boundary sets of today's 18 units, both fetched through geoBoundaries (https://www.geoboundaries.org): the National Geographic Department of Laos set of 2015 (geoBoundaries' humanitarian set), and the OpenStreetMap set of 2017. The 15 provinces and the prefecture match today's units (93 to 99 percent of each shape); 96 to 98 percent of Xaisomboun is inside the Vientiane Province shape, with the seats of all five of its districts. Name sources, read on 2026-10-01: ISO 3166-2:LA as Wikipedia prints it (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-2:LA, one prefecture and 17 provinces, with the local spellings accepted here); https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provinces_of_Laos (the same 18, under the English names used here) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xaisomboun_province (13 December 2013, five districts); the CIA World Factbook's list of administrative divisions, read from the factbook.json mirror (17 provinces and 1 prefecture, with Xaisomboun and Xiangkhouang); the table of provinces at https://www.citypopulation.de/en/laos/cities/, which lists Xaisomboun in its boundaries of 2014 from the Lao Statistics Bureau's census. The points of Bokeo, Luang Namtha, Oudomxay were moved inside their shapes, away from the middle the points file gives, so that the names on the Named sheet do not run into each other. How it works

This blank map of Laos opens on the outline of the country with the Mekong. Switch Borders on for the provinces as the map source draws them, without Xaisomboun, a province since 2013.

Outline and river first

The sheet opens with the Mekong and nothing else inside the outline. Press Print this map for a sheet to mark Vientiane, towns or mountains on. Rivers removes the Mekong, and Borders adds the lines between the provinces.

Why 16 shapes have numbers

The borders are those of 16 provinces and Vientiane Prefecture. Fifteen provinces and the prefecture are drawn as they are today, and Numbered and Named label those. The Vientiane Province shape still takes in the land that became Xaisomboun in 2013, so it stays unlabeled.

  • Five countries lie around Laos: Myanmar, China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. Have students write them in the margins.

Questions and answers

How many provinces does Laos have?

Seventeen, plus Vientiane Prefecture around the capital. The newest, Xaisomboun, was made a province in December 2013. The map source does not draw it, so this map numbers 16 shapes and leaves the Vientiane Province shape, which takes it in, unlabeled.

Is the Mekong on the blank map of Laos?

Yes. The Mekong is drawn as a line, and for long stretches it runs along the western edge of the country. Switch Rivers off for an outline with no river.

Is there a Laos map quiz?

Yes. Press Quiz yourself on this map and the page names one of the 16 numbered shapes at a time for you to tap. Savannakhet is the largest province.

Why is Vientiane on the map twice?

Vientiane Prefecture is the small shape around the capital city, and it is numbered. Vientiane Province is the larger shape north of it. On this map it still takes in Xaisomboun, so it is left unlabeled.
