How this list was compiled: Items made on 2026-10-01; ids and points are the points file's, labels are Natural Earth's English names where the points file does not say otherwise, and the accepted spellings are the ones the two name sources print. The list is today's: 15 counties. Name sources, read on 2026-10-01: ISO 3166-2:LR as Wikipedia prints it (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-2:LR, 15 counties; River Cess with the local variant Rivercess); https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counties_of_Liberia (the same 15, Rivercess in one word, with areas); the table of counties at https://www.citypopulation.de/en/liberia/cities/, which credits the Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services and the census of 11 November 2022 (the same 15, Rivercess in one word). The source file gives Gbarpolu and River Gee no ISO code and spells Gbarpolu "Gbapolu" in one field; the ids here are the ISO codes LR-GP and LR-RG. The points of Bomi, Montserrado were moved inside their shapes, away from the middle the points file gives, so that the names on the Named sheet do not run into each other. Nimba, in the north, is the largest county. Montserrado, on the coast, is the smallest, and Monrovia, the capital, is in it. Lofa is the northernmost county, and Maryland sits in the southeastern corner.
Four counties begin with Grand: Grand Cape Mount, Grand Bassa, Grand Gedeh and Grand Kru. Have students find those first.
Questions and answers
How many counties does Liberia have?
Fifteen: Bomi, Bong, Gbarpolu, Grand Bassa, Grand Cape Mount, Grand Gedeh, Grand Kru, Lofa, Margibi, Maryland, Montserrado, Nimba, Rivercess, River Gee and Sinoe. All fifteen are drawn and numbered on this map.
Which is the largest county in Liberia?
Nimba, in the north. Montserrado, which holds the capital Monrovia, is the smallest.
Is it Rivercess or River Cess?
Both are in use. The county’s own form is Rivercess, in one word, and the international code list writes River Cess. This map prints Rivercess, and the quiz accepts either.
Can I print Liberia without the county lines?
Yes. Switch Borders off and the sheet prints the plain outline of Liberia.
