How this list was compiled: Items made on 2026-10-01. The page asks Latvia, Riga, Daugavpils, Liepāja, the Daugava, the Gulf of Riga and the Baltic Sea; the four neighbors are in the list so that the page can draw them as land that is not asked. Riga and Daugavpils carry their numbers on their dots: the rings the points file gives them are left out, because a blank sheet would print their leader lines. The drawing was redrawn on 2026-10-05 with a wider frame, so that Latvia stands clear of the edges, and every point was set again. Set by hand inside their shapes: the point of Estonia (690, 72), clear of Latvia's north tip, and the point of Belarus (905, 497), between the Daugava and the border with Russia, well away from Daugavpils. The boundary file calls the river Zapadnaya Dvina and spells the town Liepaga; the labels are Daugava and Liepāja. Checked on 2026-10-01: the five country names against the United Nations list of member states (https://www.un.org/en/about-us/member-states; it prints Russian Federation, which is accepted); Riga, Daugavpils, Liepāja, the gulf and the sea against the United Nations map of Latvia (Map No. 3782 Rev. 3, https://www.un.org/geospatial/content/latvia) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latvia; Riga as the capital and Daugavpils and Liepāja as state cities in Latvia's Law on Administrative Territories and Populated Areas (https://likumi.lv/ta/en/en/id/315654); the Daugava and its mouth at Riga at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daugava and in the GeoNames gazetteer (https://www.geonames.org/). No municipality is drawn: the boundary file has the units of before the reform of 1 July 2021 (the same law and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Administrative_divisions_of_Latvia). The redrawn picture also shows six lakes of the same source (ne_10m_lakes), which are not items: Lake Pskov and the south end of Lake Peipus, Võrtsjärv, and three in Latvia that the file leaves without a name. Lambert azimuthal equal-area projection centred on 56.9°N 24.5°E, as in the first drawing, at a smaller scale; the frame runs from about 20.0 to 29.2 degrees east and 55.3 to 58.4 degrees north. Outlines simplified; small islands are left out and inlets narrower than the outline are filled. What the map draws
Estonia is north, Lithuania south, Russia east and Belarus southeast. Latvia redrew its municipalities in 2021, and the public-domain map source has the older ones, so no line is drawn inside the country. Typed answers without accents count in the quiz: Liepaja is right.
Follow the Daugava: it comes in from Belarus in the southeast, passes Daugavpils and reaches the Gulf of Riga at Riga.
Questions and answers
Which countries border Latvia?
Four: Estonia (north), Lithuania (south), Russia (east) and Belarus (southeast). The Baltic Sea is to the west. On this map the four are drawn lightly, without numbers.
What is the capital of Latvia?
Riga, the largest city. On this map it is the dot where the Daugava reaches the Gulf of Riga. Daugavpils is the second largest city and Liepāja the third.
What is the river on the map of Latvia?
The Daugava. It crosses Latvia from the southeast to the Gulf of Riga. It is also called the Western Dvina, and the quiz accepts that name.
Does the map show the regions of Latvia?
No. The map source has the municipalities of before the 2021 reform, which are out of date. So that no old line is printed, the inside of the country is left to the river and the cities.
