How this list was compiled: Every word was read again on 2026-09-30 in two dictionaries: the Spanish-English dictionary of WordReference (https://www.wordreference.com/es/en/translation.asp?spen= followed by the word) and SpanishDict (https://www.spanishdict.com/translate/ followed by the word): primer and primero, segundo, tercer and tercero, cuarto, quinto, sexto, séptimo, octavo, noveno, décimo, undécimo, piso, planta, planta baja, recepción, ascensor, elevador, escalera and habitación, and the numbers cinco to diez. WordReference lists the ordinals as primero, primer and tercero, tercer: the short form stands before a masculine noun. Which countries call the street-level floor el primer piso (Cuba, Puerto Rico, Colombia), and the thirteen countries of el elevador: Diccionario de americanismos, Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española, https://www.asale.org/damer/piso and https://www.asale.org/damer/elevador, read 2026-09-30. The origin of ascensor (late Latin ascensor, el que asciende): the Internet Archive copy of the Diccionario de la lengua española, https://web.archive.org/web/20240519114945/https://dle.rae.es/ascensor, read 2026-09-30; dle.rae.es itself refuses automated reading (HTTP 403). An earlier pass on 2026-09-20 read the archived DLE entries piso, planta, recepción and habitación, the Spanish sections of the English Wiktionary, and Spanish Proficiency Exercises, Beginning task 12, Identify ordinal numbers, University of Texas at Austin (COERLL), https://www.laits.utexas.edu/spe/beg12.html. How a round goes

The prompt names a floor in Spanish, such as el quinto piso. Count the rows up from the street and tap or click it. A wrong tap tells you which floor you touched.

Type the Spanish word instead

In More options, pick Name it. A ring lights up and you choose its Spanish name from four, or type it. Accents are forgiven, and quinto alone counts for el quinto piso.

Where el primer piso is

La planta baja is the floor at street level, and here el primer piso is the one above it, so ring 1 sits one row up. Cuba, Puerto Rico and Colombia call the street level el primer piso.

  • From fifth on, the ordinal looks little like its number: cinco and quinto, siete and séptimo, nueve and noveno.
  • El cuarto piso is the fourth floor, but un cuarto on its own can also be a room.
  • Print blank gives the hotel with 15 numbered lines, and the other print button gives the key.

Questions and answers

What are the floors of a hotel called in Spanish?

From the street up: la planta baja, then el primer piso, el segundo piso, el tercer piso, el cuarto piso, el quinto piso, el sexto piso, el séptimo piso, el octavo piso, el noveno piso and el décimo piso.

Is the ground floor la planta baja or el primer piso?

Some countries count the street level as the first floor. The academies' Diccionario de americanismos records el primer piso for the floor at ground level in Cuba, Puerto Rico and Colombia. Counted that way, this hotel's top floor would be el undécimo piso.

Why is it el primer piso and not el primero piso?

Primero and tercero lose their final o before a masculine singular noun, so it is el primer piso and el tercer piso. Used alone they keep it: el primero. The other eight floors here never change: el segundo piso, el cuarto piso.

Is a floor el piso or la planta?

Both. El piso is masculine and la planta feminine, and the number follows: el primer piso or la primera planta, el tercer piso or la tercera planta. In Spain un piso is also an apartment. Either word counts when typed.

Is an elevator el ascensor or el elevador?

El ascensor is the general word. WordReference marks el elevador for Central America, Chile and Mexico, and the Diccionario de americanismos lists it in thirteen countries. Both count when typed.
