The main loop 5

  1. el sol sun Sun. Its energy makes liquid water evaporate.
  2. la evaporación evaporation Evaporation: liquid water turns into vapor and rises.
  3. la condensación condensation Condensation: vapor cools into drops and clouds form.
  4. la precipitación precipitation Precipitation: rain, snow and hail falling from the clouds.
  5. el océano ocean Ocean. The oceans store 96% of the water on Earth.

On and under the land 7

  1. la transpiración transpiration Transpiration: water vapor given off by plants.
  2. la sublimación sublimation Sublimation: snow and ice turn straight into vapor.
  3. el deshielo snowmelt Snowmelt: water from melting snow and ice runs downhill.
  4. la escorrentía surface runoff Runoff: rain and meltwater flowing over the ground.
  5. el río river (streamflow) River. USGS calls the moving water el flujo de corriente.
  6. la infiltración infiltration Infiltration: water soaking down into the ground.
  7. el flujo de agua subterránea groundwater flow Groundwater flow: water moving slowly underground to the sea.

How this list was compiled: Read 2026-10-08 and again 2026-10-09. The Spanish names of the parts of the water cycle: US Geological Survey Water Science School, El Ciclo del Agua - The Water Cycle, Spanish, https://www.usgs.gov/special-topics/water-science-school/science/el-ciclo-del-agua-water-cycle-spanish (the page notes that English is the authoritative version of federal information). Its list of components names Condensación, Evaporación, Evapotranspiración, Flujo de agua subterránea, Infiltración, Océanos, Precipitación, Deshielo, Flujo de corriente, Sublimación and Escorrentía de la superficie; its text says the water moves over the surface by deshielo, escorrentía and flujos de agua, that the energy of el sol makes liquid water evaporate, that clouds form by condensación, that rain, snow and hail fall from the clouds, and that the oceans store 96 % of all the water on Earth. Gender and meaning of every noun: the Spanish-English dictionary of WordReference (https://www.wordreference.com/es/en/translation.asp?spen= followed by the word) and SpanishDict (https://www.spanishdict.com/translate/ followed by the word). Both give sol, océano, deshielo, río, flujo, ciclo and arroyo as masculine and evaporación, condensación, precipitación, transpiración (also spelled traspiración; the botany sense is transpiration), sublimación (the passage from solid to gas), escorrentía (run-off), infiltración (of liquids), lluvia, nieve and nube as feminine; mar is masculine or feminine; agua is a feminine noun that takes el in the singular. Water cycle is ciclo del agua in both (https://www.wordreference.com/es/translation.asp?tranword=water%20cycle, https://www.spanishdict.com/translate/water%20cycle), groundwater is agua subterránea in both, runoff is escorrentía in WordReference, and a school worksheet is hoja de ejercicios or ficha de ejercicios in both (the second marked as used in Spain in SpanishDict). Escorrentía superficial: https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ciclo_hidrol%C3%B3gico. The English names and what each part is: this site's English water cycle page, which follows the English USGS page. The drawing: The site's own drawing of 2026-09-26, first made for the English water cycle page and used here unchanged. Own work, nothing traced. Licence: own work

How it works

This water cycle diagram worksheet in Spanish names 12 parts of el ciclo del agua on one landscape. The blank copy prints with a numbered line for each part, and the labeled copy is the answer key.

The steps of the water cycle in Spanish

El sol heats the sea and drives la evaporación. The vapor cools into clouds, la condensación, falls as la precipitación and gathers in el océano.

On and under the land: seven more words

Plants give off vapor, la transpiración, and snow turns straight into it, la sublimación. Meltwater, el deshielo, and la escorrentía run downhill into el río. La infiltración takes water into the ground, where el flujo de agua subterránea carries it to the sea.

Words a class may write instead

La lluvia counts for la precipitación and el mar for el océano. The U.S. Geological Survey's Spanish page calls the river's moving water el flujo de corriente.

  • The six words that end in -ción are all feminine: la evaporación, la condensación, la precipitación, la transpiración, la sublimación and la infiltración.

Questions and answers

How do you say water cycle in Spanish?

El ciclo del agua. Ciclo is a masculine noun, so the phrase takes el. The U.S. Geological Survey titles its Spanish page El Ciclo del Agua.

Is it el agua or la agua?

El agua. Agua is a feminine noun, but a feminine noun that begins with a stressed a takes el and un in the singular. The plural goes back to las: las aguas.

What is runoff in Spanish?

La escorrentía, a feminine noun. The U.S. Geological Survey's Spanish list of water cycle parts writes escorrentía de la superficie, surface runoff, and that counts as a typed answer too.

What is groundwater in Spanish?

El agua subterránea; more than one is las aguas subterráneas. The part on this diagram is el flujo de agua subterránea, groundwater flow.

How do you say worksheet in Spanish?

La hoja de ejercicios. WordReference and SpanishDict both give it for a school worksheet, along with la ficha de ejercicios, which SpanishDict marks as used in Spain.
