País, a masculine noun; comunidad, región and isla, feminine nouns; comunidad autónoma, feminine, autonomous community: both dictionaries. Blank map of Spain: autonomous communities in Spanish, on paper

Print blank, under More options, numbers each community and adds 17 lines for the Spanish names; the labeled copy is the key. Ceuta and Melilla, the two autonomous cities, are drawn and not asked. Some borders on this map are disputed. Disputed areas are shown but not asked.

  • Five of these names take an article: el País Vasco, la Comunidad de Madrid, la Comunidad Valenciana, la Región de Murcia and las Islas Baleares.
  • WordReference marks Aragón and el País Vasco as masculine and names such as Galicia, Cataluña and Andalucía as feminine: Aragón es bonito, Galicia es bonita.
  • La Rioja keeps its capital L inside a sentence, vivo en La Rioja, because the article is part of the name.
